If you don’t have any homemade pinto beans, you can substitute a can of pinto beans. You will need to add a teaspoon or two of bacon grease and adjust the seasonings with salt and pepper to taste.
2 cups Southern Style Pinto Beans
1/8 tsp ground cumin
1/4 tsp chili powder
1. In a wide saucepan over low heat, combine all the ingredients, removing any large pieces of fatback if present.
2. With a potato masher or immersion blender, mash the beans into a fairly smooth consistency, adding more water if needed. If the beans seem too runny just cook them a little longer, stirring very frequently.
