Reminiscent of the familiar grilled cheese sandwiches, these indulgent croutons aren’t grilled at all. They’re broiled.
4 slices 100% whole wheat sandwich bread
4 teaspoons garlic butter spread — softened
2 slices American cheese
Spread one side of each slice of bread with garlic butter.
Sandwich one slice of cheese between the un-buttered sides of 2 slices. If desired, trim off the crusts. (I don’t!)
Place the sandwiches under a pre-heated broiler to toast, then flip and toast the other side.
Allow to cool enough for the cheese to set before slicing into cubes.
NOTES : If garlic butter spread is not available, stir granulated garlic, 1/4 tsp or to taste, into the softened butter. Add a few dried parsley flakes, as well.
